Communicating Differently

When communicating with people from different groups and cultures, I do find myself communicating with them differently. It is my belief that I adapt my speaking according to the group that I am addressing. For example, when I am communicating with my nail technician, who is of Asian descent, I find myself speaking very slowly, and clearly so that he will be able to read my lips in case he does not understand the language in which I am speaking. When speaking with some parents who do not understand some of the educational terminology, I find myself using simple terms in which parents can easily understand. When addressing my colleagues I am very sure that I take my time to pronounce words correctly and when I send out letters to colleagues and parents I make sure that there are not any grammar errors or mistakes.

  1. It is hard to communicate with people that are not the same has you. I have ran across a nail person like that. I have to speak slow like that for they can understand what I am saying.

  2. Sometimes when I am in the nail salon I do hear people talking slower to the technicians. I guess its human nature to think that by slowing down someone is going to naturally understand us better. I do that as well.

  3. You said a mouth full when you mentioned how you speak around your colleagues. I'm the same way. At work I am professional but yet open up to being fun, but I never want anyone to not take me serious or think I'm less intelligent than I am.

  4. The health coordinator is setting himself up for a lawsuit. Asthma is very dangerous and in case of an attack an inhaler is necessary. In this case he should contact the Dr and double check paperwork. Communication in a respectful empathetic manner is in order.
